Red Centre - West MacDonnell Ranges 2/12/07 - 5/12/07

Devils Marbles

The boys had a bit of fun rolling these marbles around the desert. These large lumps of granite, once deep underground, where formed when the surrounding sandstone was gradually eroded away.

Callum has almost pushed this marble to the top.

The Devils Marbles are 100kms south of Tennant Creek, surrounded by 1000kms of desert.

The Red Centre shop. This shop is about the size of a shipping container but sells every item imaginable. In the Red Centre shop you can buy, fruit, tyres, stereos, clothes, wine, a quad bike, fresh vegetables, car parts and gardening needs. We bought mango ice cream!

The speed limit in the NT is 130 kms on the open road. Until this year the speed limit was not limited at all and this change has upset many Territorians. The road toll this year has been higher than last year causing many locals to question this speed limit changed.
( These road signs are of academic interest only.. we go every where at 90kms/hour)

Mitchel on the Tropic of Capricorn. Mitch cannot decide whether he prefers to be in the tropics. We have crossed the Tropic of Capricorn three times.

The West MacDonnell Ranges. Albert Namatjira country.

Mt Sonder from Glen Helen. Richard, Mitch and Callum scrambled up the cliffs at Glen Helen to get some pictures. It was an exciting climb on the edge of the cliff, and we were not sure how to get back down. In the end we had to scramble through the bush and swim back through the gorge.

Callum in the Glen Helen Gorge and Finke River. Some claim the Finke River to be the oldest river in the world. It has been running on this spot for 100 Million years. It starts in the MacDonnell Ranges and disappears into the ground 700 km south in South Australia. Most of the time this river does not run, but consists of only 9 permanent water holes. These water holes have been a travel route for indigenous folk for thousands of years.

The perfect omelette and haircut boy.

Jo and son Liam. Jo is a Scottish nurse who had been working as a remote area nurse on Hermannsburg Mission - an Aboriginal community. A very different experience for Liam, who's playmates were the local aboriginal boys.

Ormiston Gorge. It is incredibly beautiful and rugged.

One of the permanent water holes on Finke River in the Ormiston Gorge. These isolated waterholes team with life; fish, lobsters, insects. This area is also home to rare Black Footed Wallabies and desert rats. So rare, in fact, we did not see any.

The Howes at Ormiston Gorge.

Ellery Creek Big Hole. The water in these water holes is very cold, but out of the water the temperature is around 35 degrees.

A long nose dragon - spotted and identifed by Mitchel.

When these dragons get scared, they bolt off on their hind legs like they are starting a 100 metre sprint.

A Damselfly... and we are in the middle of the desert
