Katherine River
Due to our extended breakdown in Katherine, we were able to get to know the town and it's people a little better than expected.
Katherine is a town that has moved three times since it was first established in the 1860's. It had to move mostly due to flooding and the movement of the main river crossing. Katherine River is the first permanent river system that John Stuart (the explorer) found after travelling north through the red centre. It was named by Stuart after the one of the daughters of his expedition sponsors. The town is the third biggest in NT and has a population of about 10,000 people.
Things to do in Katherine....
Well there are actually a few good things in Katherine, but you can only visit the small museum so many times. This time of year Katherine is hot.. 38-40 degrees most days.
After checking out the hot springs, museum, pretty river picnic spots, shops ( we've discovered that shops have great air conditioning...!),
we had no vehicle so we then went......
bike riding..!
wildlife spotting...
Mitch had a haircut ( hooray...!)
did some cooking....

We also did a fair bit of fishing for the local favourite - Barramundi, but caught no fish.. so there is no photo!
The milk of human kindness.
We had several nice surprises while stuck in Katherine.
Richard called the wrong courtesy bus for a trip to the local country club. This did not seem to worry the driver who happily transported the Howes to the one of the competitor clubs in town.
Andy, the Mechanic that fixed our van, was more excited to see the radiator than we were. Andy had planned to work any time of the day, or day of the week to get us on the road when the part arrived.

Dean, Jo, James, Hannah and Will made our stay a very memorable one. Jo, whilst cutting Mitchel's hair, learned of our breakdown in Katherine. The following day, Jo came looking for us in one of Katherine's many Caravan Parks and asked us to come and stay in their house. The Herseys had just moved into their new house and offered the use of their old house.
These hospitable folk made us feel very welcome in Katherine - the food is excellent and their deck is large and cool.
I recommend a stay with the Herseys when in Katherine!
